Lincoln fibre (FTTP) network build
Client: CityFibre
Location: Lincoln city centre
Date: March 2022 - June 2024
Value: £22m
The challenge
CityFibre, the UK’s largest independent full-fibre infrastructure company, was working in partnership with Lincoln County Council (LCC) to create a new fibre network, serving 42,000 homes across Lincoln city centre. The council had had a positive experience working with Trust on previous utility projects, so together they appointed Trust as principal contractor.
The role we played
We programmed, managed and constructed the full-fibre network – excavating, installing and reinstating over 60km of trenchwork in the busy city centre. The project brought together our telecoms, traffic and reinstatement teams, who designed the excavations to use existing telecoms infrastructure through PIA agreements with Openreach, saving the client time and money. They also collaborated with the council, developers and other utility companies to minimise disruption.
The impact we made
We completed the project on time and 5% under budget, while also trialling new materials to improve the quality of reinstatements and reduce defects. Our approach led to us being nominated for Street Works UK’s Best Collaborative Works 2024 for teaming up with Balfour Beatty Living and Cadent Gas to install 3km of fibre alongside gas main and footpath works.
