The challenge
SSE wanted to deliver a vehicle-to-grid (V2G) EV charging station at Eastcroft Depot in Nottingham. The depot provides essential maintenance for trains which carry passengers right across the country. Its new charging facilities would enable electric vehicles not just to charge, but also to export energy back to the grid – supporting more efficient energy use, reducing strain on the network and making a positive contribution towards decarbonisation goals.
The role we played
Our electric, civils and reinstatement teams worked together to install the EV charging infrastructure. This included excavating, ducting, cabling, installing charging units and fully reinstating the site. The depot remained live throughout, creating a range of logistical and safety challenges, particularly in coordinating tasks around vehicle movements and essential daily operations. Our approach was to carefully plan and sequence the work, collaborating closely with SSE and site operators to make sure everything ran smoothly and safely.
The impact we made
As always, we worked flexibly throughout the project, adapting to site constraints and operational requirements to make sure work was completed without impacting the depot’s day-to-day activities. We delivered a fully operational, high-quality V2G EV charging system which is helping support the transition to smarter, more sustainable energy systems and low-carbon transport. It’s already reducing emissions and having a positive impact on the depot’s energy efficiency.
