The challenge
Nottingham City Council had commissioned a brand new walking and cycling bridge over the River Trent, connecting the city and county. They needed a new network of footpaths so the community could access the bridge from both sides of the river.
They also wanted to create a new pond to alleviate the structural footprint of the bridge and support flood defences. Lastly, they asked us to make safety improvements at a nearby junction, improving road access to the area.
The role we played
Our civils team got to work in early 2025, before the bridge building project began. We took a cross-party approach, working in collaboration not just with Nottingham City Council, but Nottinghamshire County Council and Rushcliffe Borough Council too.
We created three footpaths on the county side (south bank) of the river, across a recreation area known as The Hook, and one on the city side (north bank). As well as developing the new pond and improving the road junction, we also carried out remedial works to the footpath linking the National Watersports Centre to the new bridge.
The impact we made
Working close to the river, in challenging environmental conditions, meant we had to adapt to multiple challenges and design changes. But the huge hands-on experience of our multi-skilled team meant we still delivered a high quality project, on time and on budget, bringing in extra resource at short notice whenever needed.
The new footpaths create safe, accessible routes for the community, creating opportunities for exercise, activity and more sustainable travel. The project manager, design team and all of the local councils were delighted with the results.
